fusiotherm is dodgie
« on: March 04, 2014, 05:50:21 PM »
hi all,
 went to another fusiotherm installation today, water hosing everywhere.
 Clearly faulty product, a 15 mm socket had cracked around its circumference.(see attached pic)
it had no stress on it and was about 10 years old. (cold water @ 550kpa)
flooded the house in a block of 40 houses ALL with the same product in them,
i don't use this product and never will, i simply don't trust it.

I've had a bad experience with it and had no back up from the importers so I won't touch it again. Not sure why people bother with it still?

Yes - ask a certain hotel in Wellington that had it .... not good news at all.

Have you spoken to the fusiontherm people? I have found them good to deal with always helpful. Yes I have had to repair fusiontherm before but has always been an installation problem or setup issue guys don't seam to read the books. Our trade has a lot of monkeys in it!!!! Its not really right to come on here bagging the product unless you have already spoken to them and received less than acceptable service. The internet is full of experts I have noticed since coming to this country.

I am not even going there, I don't trust it and wont touch it.

you bet there is monkeys out there, but there is also products that even moneys wont touch.

And the internet is full of ppl with there opinions, and that's the world we live in aye  :)

I agree with Bowtie Boy - and I dispute the "monkeys" description.  I think there are a lot of monkeys who pretend to be plumbers, gasfitters and drainlayers, but who are not in fact apprentice served practitioners, but rather pretenders to the throne.  Most people I have met over many years in this trade are very proud of their qualification and what they do.   Green pipe of any brand is not preferred by many practitioners over something like copper.  There have been failures up and down the country and the first charge is often "installation" - when, after sending away for testing it has appeared to be a failure in the pipe.

Green pipe with be the new Dux Quest of the industry I believe in years to come.  You can't beat a good quality piece of copper pipe.

Thanks for sharing this.  I  will not trust that product either, as I had heard some bad things about it as well.

Did anyone ever come across the chinese copy of fusiotherm? Dismy it was called. The pipe was rubbish, so was the welding tool. it was unbelievable. think of the worst quality product youve seen come in from china and this one was right up there with the worst. it looked like school kids designed the welder...back in 1960...

I know a few jobs where this stuff was put in including a police boat, a prison building in wanganui and a hospital down in levin.

I heard from some other plumbers they had to carry out extensive repairs or replace the entire ringmain in the hospital. They were making this crap in shanghai and sending it over. Eventually fusiotherm bought them out and the factory closed. Not sure what the deal was with any warranties.

ive seen fusiotherm installed in meat works...on the 90 deg steriliser watermain......spent years replacing it...total crap stuff.....you can do a dodgy looking join and it will last forever and also install a joint that looks great but leaks under a test....go figure

i leak coming from under a fusiotherm clip 16mm.
and when we removed the section of pipe, we found it cracked inside.
this system is at 500kpa and 65 degrees and it was a hot water pipe.

I was involved the other year in renewing the whole hot water fusio pipework on a large commercial job and it had all split like the picture that's posted.
Some of it was installation but not all, think it just can't handle temperature well as the system was only running 65-70C which you wouldn't call too high.

do they still have different grade pipes for use in different scenarios?

I recall a 100+ room hotel that we piped out in this but we had different schedule pipes for different applications - ie cold, tempered & hot - 1000's meters of pipe and only ever been back for one leak which showed itself within a couple of years

cold = blue stripe?
tempered = plain?
hot = dark green stripe?

can't recall exactly now - don't use it anymore and hated using the stuff

is it as simple as these failures being that wrong pipe type used for intended purpose?

that failure with the socket is probably due to to much heat going into the socket for to long before being joined?

would be interesting to know how many installers followed the manufacturers test procedure as it was very comprehensive and time consuming - not many I would bet

I must agree, have used literally miles of fusiotherm pipe over the last 12 years. The only problems encountered involve bad workmanship, apart from splits at the ends of pipe lengths, usually caused by careless handling (p.w's staff are bad at this, as are other trades on sites). The clip in the picture has also been nailed instead of the SUPPLIED screw being used, therefore no movement to allow for expansion, which is vital in fusio installations. As always if the instructions and are followed then problems are minimised. Courses are available,  I think they are even free.Still like copper though!!!
