Empty header tank
« on: June 05, 2010, 05:16:34 PM »
I've been having problems with my hot water running out after only one shower, has never been a problem before. Decided to have a look at the header tank and found there is no water in it. The ball cock moves freely but only a very small drip coming from the inflow pipe. Any thoughts on why the water is not flowing into the tank?

The ballcock is connected to an inlet valve, the valve could be damaged or blocked. replace the inlet valve and you should be fine, don't forget to turn off your water main, even better just call a plumber  ;)

Just to expand on that a little a lot of houses with supply tanks have galv iron pipes that are rusting .
If rust is found to be blocking your ball cock you may wish to get the plumber to fit a line strainer next to the ball cock .

you could fit a line strainer but plumbing world also sell pyrmid filers which are a red plastic filter that slide inside the ballcock inlet, will make your ballcock last longer, you could also replace the galvanised pipe to the ballcock.
