Hot water causing pipes to make a loud banging noise
« on: August 15, 2018, 07:13:55 PM »

When the hot water tap is turned on in the bathroom on the third level, you can hear this loud banging noise on the 3rd and 2nd floor.

The bangs start to happen about 10-15 seconds after the hot water tap has been turned on. There is a bang every 3-4 seconds and this banging noise continues for a little while after the tap has been turned off.

This unit was built in 2017 and is just over one year old. This banging noise started from day one.

I have heard from a professional that this noise be related to the pipes expanding and possibly not have enough space to expand.

Questions I have:
Do I have the right to have this noise/ this issue rectified?
Is it legal to install pipes in such a way that they make this horrendous prominent noise?

Hi Ladybird,

Expanding pipes causing noise is BS. You certainly have the right to live in a home with no banging pipes. I have come across many banging pipes during my carrier and there is simply too many causes to point to one thing. Reasons start with bad plumbing right through to cheap imported fittings.

Either way, you need to document this fault and submit a complaint with the builder (whoever your contract is with) and request for this to be fixed. If they refuse you can report this to the PGDB requesting an investigation. You may also engage a property / council inspector to provide a report which I assume will cost you a fee. I would try to get images of the plumbing done as this may indicate what the problem is right away.

Good luck with this.
Please note that the advice I am giving is only my opinion and not necessarily a fact.  Please refer to our terms and conditions.
