Fellow Practitioner Issue 208 Dated 30 May 2014
« on: May 30, 2014, 06:14:18 AM »
Did you hear the one about the Plumbers Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board who pursued a Landlord for employing a home handyman to install a new toilet seat?

Or what about the Board refusing to issue a license because the supervisor won’t supply his date of birth over the telephone to a person claiming to be from the Board when they already have the supervisor’s details.

The long awaited follow up report from the Office of the Auditor General (OAG) was tabled in Parliament this week - and what can we say – we thought it was going to be a serious report written by credible people about serious issues - but it would appear we were wrong.

The toilet seat issue has caused a great deal of discussion around our smoko room and is becoming the "can you answer this question" of the week.

What has fascinated me though is what the Act says:
"6 Meaning of sanitary plumbing
(1)  In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires sanitary plumbing means -
(a) the work of fixing or unfixing any sanitary fixture or sanitary appliance or any associated fittings or accessories"

Of course a toilet seat comes under an associated fitting or accessories.  Who knew.  The chap that pointed this out is a pure genius!!  I see the Board pursued the home handyman - oh to have so much time on their hands - while strictly speaking this is what the Act says, the Board should be called to task for frivolous use of practitioners funds.

I am guessing toilet seats will be exempted when the Act is looked at for review.

In regards to the OAG report - where to now for the Federation?  This report doesn't really achieve anything - it gives no recommendations despite some problems still occurring - the most obvious of which is the Board are not considered trustworthy by the industry.  I can't believe the AG didn't make some recommendations about fees and levies as we are the MOST expensive regulated trade in terms of what we have to pay.  And then I read the bit about the Board wanting to have a better relationship with the Federation - at this point I fell off my chair and decided that to continue on reading would be a health and safety risk.

Have you learned lessons only of those who admired you, and were tender with you, and stood aside for you?  Have you not learned great lessons from those who braced themselves against you, and disputed the passage with you?  (Walt Whitman 1819-1891)  American Poet

Poor handy man. Interesting that the have the resources to go after him but nearly SIX years after placing an ad in the papers regarding missing gas certificates (Sept 08) they still haven't charged the man at the centre of the fraud. Bearing in mind that they placed this ad nearly six years ago, how long had they actually been following his activities?  We're probably talking about the better part of 8 - 10 yrs. No need for any circus to visit Wellington, they have their own in residence.

The Auditor Generals office must have shares in a paint factory with all the whitewash they have used on this report. What a total waste of time.

So now the Auditor Generals Office won't do anything, the Regulations Review Committee won't do anything, the minister won't do anything, the Social Services Committee won't do anything, the Government won't do anything, MBIE won't do anything and it takes a lifetime to get the Ombudsman's office to do anything and then the Government just ignores them anyway.

It looks like as an industry we are getting told that all these organisations put in place to protect peoples rights are a total waste of taxpayers money and as an industry we have no rights.  This is nothing less than a dictatorship.

People have put their lives on the line to fight dictatorships and here our government is developing micro dictatorships in our own country. Screw the lot of them.
