A really interesting newsletter and one that will cause a bit of food for thought.  I think most tradies have done cashies in their time - but it is a form of theft - and it does serve to drive down prices in the long run.  No one will pay the full going rate on a Monday if they can get someone to do it for half price on a Saturday - and what pisses me off is that often it is someone who is pinching the materials from their employer, and using their tools and vehicle to boot.  It's all shits and giggles until someone giggles and shits so to speak i.e. when the job goes well it's all ok, but if something goes wrong the homeowner will forget they were paying you "cheap" rates and will want the full cover that insurance etc would provide - except that it doesn't if you haven't got any - and if you are doing a cashie and aren't covered for public liability then you won't have any.  Cheap suddenly isn't cheap any more.  I've seen this happen to apprentices before and it isn't good.
