Fellow Practitioner Issue 321 Dated 11 November 2016
« on: November 11, 2016, 06:20:34 AM »
The word around the country is that plumbers, gasfitters and drainlayers are busy, but is that enough for the future or are practitioners falling into the trap of becoming complacent with temporary financial stability.

The Federation is continuing to participate in relevant meetings and workshops, regarding qualifications and training, to help ensure the industry increases the amount of training apprentices get off the job and to ensure qualifications meet the demands of the industry. As there is little communication with the Minister of Building and Housing it would be easy to say we are at odds with the Government as to what is needed by the industry. Perhaps it’s time for the industry to play a TRUMP card and show we will not be treated with contempt.

hi guys this from this weeks f/p. (When can you expect the process to be completed – the Federation would guess the next Government will be working on it so we would expect 2018 or later)
...ah but what government? with the world being swept in the direction of: BREXIT and TRUMP what next for us? maybe Winston/Gareth will come out Trumps, cheers

I'm in the lower North Island and charge out at $87.00 inc GST per hour for normal hours and $117.30 for overtime and weekends.  My accountant believes I should be charging out at $120 for normal hours but the market won't pay that. Every day I get told by people that they can get someone to do it in the weekend for $45.00.   It's like the Federation has been saying that some times people in the industry are their own worst enemies. You don't see lawyers doing cashies and look what they charge per hour.

Hi Everyone.

It's good to see a bit of discussion going on about charge out rates.  It would be great if  more people could put their rates and area on this site so we can come up with a range of rates and a median.

Regards

18 months ago I was charging $65/hr incl gst in Southland/Fiordland.

However I was being charged $65/hr +gst by other local plumbing firms when I had to have IQP and steel pipe work done and I know there are others charging more for jobbing/charge-up works.

50% of clients would complain about the rates but I only ever had 2 non payers - one at about $100 and the other at $1500.

I would go out of my way to do tendered works - residential/commercial and preferred commercial over residential solely due to the fact it is so much less hassle chasing payment and if the jobs go well better margins and profit.

$65 +GST for commercial work
$70.00 + GST for plumbing
$75.00 + GST for gasfitting

Gas Servicing $98 for first 30 minutes, $26 per 15 minute slot thereafter (all inclusive)

Standard travel charge on all jobs $25.30 incl GST

No other hidden charges like first hour on site etc.  I think we need to lift our rates after have a look at some other local firms.  Costs are escalating and wages have exploded.
