Does anyone know what are the legal requirements/qualifications needed for welding steel/black iron gas pipework.
Cheers

hi ade, this will probably not be too helpfull but in one of my gas audits awhile ago i was asked by the auditor (mike Anderson) what would i do if i needed to make a connection in a steel gas pipe, i said get someone else to do it, he said correct get someone who is qualified in this area. i did say that it may be no use however if you were to contact someone like Mac McIver at the open polytec i am sure that they could point you in the right direction. As a matter of interest i failed that audit on another matter only to be passed after a bit of research on the failed question and re-examined some time later at a cost of $135.00. if you are asked questions on the gas code, sooner than later you will not know something, failed, research the write answer, reaudit some time later, pass $135.00. good work if you can get it,cheers.

You should probably looking for a welder who can weld to API 1104 which is the American Petroleum Industry Standard.  These are guys that weld the high pressure transmission pipelines.

Hi there you will need a welder with a ASME 9 qualification. Most site welders will hold this qualification so are relatively easy to find in your yellow pages.

geezz they teach us at tech to weld black iron...i always knew that any welding needs to be done by a certified welder and could not fathom why they tried to teach us knowledge that we cant realisticly use in the real world...its dangerous to teach people enough so that they think they can do the job themselfs...the young fullas at tech now think they can go about willy nilly welding black iron pipe...dangerous....Even one of the tutors at tech(a real knoob) tried to tell us that it was eaiser and alot more cost effective to pipe out houses in black iron compared to say pexal...i asked him what about at every join the pipe needs to be chamfered for the initial penetration weld...he just put me down as best he could and then went on to say he just straight butt welded the pipe with no prep at all...what a winner he is leading those young guys down the garden path.
Tech teaching needs to be more uniform and structured and not have clowns like this trying to push there world view on young minds.

The received welding processes TIG, MIG, and place are all resourceful of welding copy brace cylinder to unsullied poise pipe. Prescriptive carbon E-class welding electrodes same E70 for MIG or 7018 for joystick instrument keep the pipework unitedly, but the abolitionist leave be compromised by the demand of metal and metal in the impurity. Therefore a high-carbon unblemished brace electrode staleness be utilised to holdfast the weld fag. 309 welding electrodes substance the penalise property to insure that the emancipationist has priggish penetration and structural wholeness.
