No studying old exam papers won't be enough.  You need to be familiar with the codes - for gas or plumbing, or drainlaying.  Very familiar.  By all means study old papers but widen your study to include other documents that a certifier may use.  This will include Health and Safety Legislation for sure.
Have you learned lessons only of those who admired you, and were tender with you, and stood aside for you?  Have you not learned great lessons from those who braced themselves against you, and disputed the passage with you?  (Walt Whitman 1819-1891)  American Poet

Its a bit short notice for you Roberto (but others reading this might get something out of it for the next exams)...but if I have to read through something like regs or legislation or hearing notes,  I put a copy in the toilet at home (perhaps employers should be copies in their works loo's too), you would be surprised how much you can cover reading every morning for 10 to 15 mins....and on another positive note, most of it gives you the shits too...its a win win.

I can't "go" unless I am reading... I'll read the same thing over and over, if nothing is available. I know all the directions for the shampoo and toilet cleaners by heart, so why not the regs/legislation.

Good luck, I hope you do well. There really is no silver bullet but to do as much study as you can, when you can.

I studied and mock tested the last 5 years of the certifying exams. went through G12, G13 G4, G15. The branz guide to plumbing. AS3500 part 2 plumbing and drainage. AS3500 part 1 water services.  G1 Personal hygiene. The Doyles plumbing books. AS3500 part 4 heated water services. Guide for safety with Underground Services. My old open polytec books, which included Backflow prevention, Hot water services. Cold water services. The Health and Safety Act. Shafts and Excavations.Timber framed buildings .E1. And lots more that i have from my polytec, and studying for my regs, days.

I have spoken to the pgdb on many occasions and they stated they are happy with a 50% pass rate. 185 plumbers paid to sit the last exam. So i suppose they would be happy to pass about 93. A lot of the answers are up to interpretation, with the exception of the multi choice questions. To my knowledge, the panel who write the exam also mark it. There is no scaling. In past years if a question was incorrect or unrealistic it still stood even if no one answered it correctly. There is no set resource literature for the certifying exam. The correspondence didn't help a friend who sat the exam either. I  don't know if the pgdb exam panel set the exam to correspond with the correspondence.   Please check out the nov 2013 exam when it comes out before you start studying. There was a lot of questions that required referencing, the questions were obscure and irrelevant, they just want to see if you can reference the answers. By the time  you answered the other questions, it left stuff all time to reference these answers.      I don't know what you should study but the list above should be a good start.  best of luck.

Hi Roberto as Jax sez get familar with using the codes where to look etc .
we all have different learning styles so do what works for you. I found writing stuff out over and over helped me to get it to stick and read over and over....
the PGDB have legislation on their site and other information that you should read, supervision requirements the acts etc
Have a plan on what your going to do when your sitting the exam
eg read first, do a easy one get warmed up perhaps what you know in the multiple choice then into the sticky ones. keep calm
If you finish early go over your answers with what you can find in the supplied codes.
Remember to go over anything in pencil  with pen.

5 months, put in the effort and it will pay off. best of luck .

cheers,

the one thing I don't get is how much info do you need to cover??? I remember sitting my reg exams and there were questions in it that covered a certain part in plumbing that id never seen or heard of before, if we were given topics 6 months in advance on what to be prepared for eg: backflow, underground safety, etc wouldn't we be better off or are the exams set to test and surprise you???

also are there anyother plumbers in chch wanting to do their cert exam in june please get in contact, cheers

just had a thought....

should I find all the info I can on a topic like eg backflow , and study up as much as I can on it, then find and study solar, then perhaps stacks, then legislation (I hate that word!), calcuations, pipe sizing etc etc??

Or

I could go over all the past exam papers and focus on what the most popular topics in the exams are overall? eg if backflow appears in 9 out of 10 of the past papers I know I HAVE to study that?

just a few ideas im floating around.....if I fail it its not the end of the world really...just a waste of $400, but I will try everything I can to pass, might even get me a pay increase at work which will be great as Im buying a house soon......

^^^ that is basically what I did

I got ALL of the past exams, that was 10-15yrs worth, I tabulated ALL of the questions and the number of times they appeared in the exams, I ranked them by giving them a percentage of the total number of questions and then allocated my time studying and learning them as a corresponding percentage on that particular topic - if it was less than 5% then I didn't bother studying it at all

this proved very successful for me and I think it makes it easier to deal with things that you don't necessarily do all that often

No, the old years question papers are not at all enough to qualify any exams you must  read some good books to crack your exam.
