Hi guys, Just a quick question I come across the other day, its from the certifying plumber exam from November 2011, question one of the multiple choice section

1. What is the maximum diameter for a roof penetration that is permitted to be sealed with an EDPM rubber boot flashing before a soaker flashing is required??

The possible answers are as follows...

A. 50mm
B. 60mm
C. 75mm
D. 90mm
E. 110mm

I had just been reading E2 External Moisture  which covers pipe penetrations and flashings. My copy of E2 also includes all the latest amendments. It says that  EDPM rubber boot flashings are"Suitable for pipes UP TO 85mm diameter'' (page 87)  before a soaker flashing is required so I answered C. 75mm as 90mm is techically wrong as it is 5mm to big to use a EDPM rubber boot.

To my amazement I was wrong and the answer was B. 60mm...Can anyone assist me is seeing where I went wrong and what standard or code I should have referenced or is the model answer wrong? Is it in AS/NZS 3500 somewhere and I missed it??

Comments would be appreciated. Questions are hard enough as it is some of them, I need to know what I am learning is correct.

Cheers

I remember hearing about  this  around a year ago

''any roof penetration greater than 60mm will have to be trayed up to the ridge"

i thought it was a T.A  requirement ,  however it must be in a code somewhere in external moisture/ penetrations .....

I just had another look, I see what has happened now. It has been amended in Aug 2011 to 85mm from 60mm so the older exam I did the question had the right answer at the time but now it seems to have changed. I printed my copy of E2 about 3weeks ago so it has all the latest amendments which are written next to the affected paragragh. In my version the same 8.4.17 is page 86 (Amend 5 Aug 2011). Thanks for taking the time to look it up man, makes sense now ive found the amendment reference.

I don't know the answer and I feel the question is quiet tough. I never seen such type of questions asked in any of the plumbing exams.
