Open-book exams
« on: March 02, 2012, 04:50:07 PM »
what do you think?, personally I would not have passed if they weren't, its like my work mate said - you see a question and think..."oh shit i cant remember that, i done that 5 years ago!!!", whereas now you can just look up the answer in the building code/standards!, although all the questions answers arn't fully in the code/standards, otherwise we would all get close to 100% wouldnt we???  :D :D :D

Im 50/50 on this one. Partly because it seems that the board has tried to make things "easyier" in terms of exams, as no one was passing, but im pretty sure back in the day, or from what ive heard you did the first stage, second sage qualification thing, before you sat regos. And then rego wasnt open book. So overall it was way more thorough.

If you know your way around the codes, then the exams shouldn't be impossible. Then again does this issue (open book) lower the overall standards across the board? Joe Bloggs can study up and pay to sit an exam without doing formal training!

The idea which was based on the Australian system is to teach guys how to use there codes rather than learn meaningless info that they may not ever use, but to train them how to look up that info if required. Most of us here would struggle to pass the same exam we all sat under the old regiem without excessive studing. In Saying this I read through the plumbing registration exam from june last year and it was far to easy even without the codes to help. They definatley need to make the exam alot harder with it being open book.
Also totally agree Robbo some of the best guys I've ever know on the tools can not pass the exams they know there stuff they just struggle when it comes to the way exam questions are phrased.

If i remember correctly the OAG report stated that the exam pass rate was not good enough meaning the exam was too hard or people wernt being taught correctly...it also said(from memory) that the pgdb should be aming for a 60-70% pass rate so because the ITO is in a shambles at the moment and people arnt rearly being taught correctly they(pgdb) have far lowered there standards to come in to line with the teaching which makes me understand why there pushing so hard for cpd because they know they have set there standards too low to enable poorly trained apprentises to pass...i learnt stuff all from tech most of what i know was learnt from reading and trying to interpert the codes and my employer of course talking to the tutors helped but they were mostly intrested in acessing us...for example i was set loose in the sheet metal shop having NEVER used and sheet tooling and expected to build a damb near perfect air ducting system...what a joke!...it all starts from the bottom bad teaching method(not teachers but bad method) will bring bad pass rates and that is what we have seen in the pass few years untill the pgdb was forced to dumb down the exams to come into line with the OAG...haha food for thought...by the way im a conspricary therorist lol.

haha Thunder thats right!    bring on the NWO.....       totally believe what you say to be correct!!

the sooner there is a global training system the better!!     we should just be doing what australia is doing END of !!!  (maybe even a republic of?!?     :))

why kiwis and there're bureaucrats continually have to reinvent the wheel really is beyond me.....

I like what has been said above - teach a man how to use his codes/standards - practical ability comes with time on tools....

maybe there should be a practical and theory exam?!?
