Help with my visit checklist please! Update!
« on: December 03, 2013, 09:00:08 AM »
Update -

Im ready for my 4month visit to look for a job & want to make sure I dont forget anything important!!
So Ive done a portfolio which includes my CV & letters of recommendation. A Police check form for my Work Visa when I get a job offer, PGDB forms. Ive packed workwear just in case I can get some work experience - voluntarily of course! Question - steel toe cap boots or shoes? Or neither??

Am I forgetting anything & does anyone have any other suggestions?
Feel free to ask any questions too.

Appreciative thanks as usual.

Gav

Hi Gav

If you are looking for commercial experience then steel caps I would think would be essential.  I assume you have emailed/discussed/read all the requirements for the PGDB - and are prepared to do what it takes to be assessed for a licence if you can get permanent work.

Bring a big smile and your enthusiasm - along with a map so you know where you are going :) and you will be fine.  We are just going into an awesome summer - I imagine you will be keen to leave the cold weather behind.

Hello again Jaxcat. We spoke ages ago if you remember??!
Im aiming for the domestic side of the industry as thats where my experience is .
Dont worry about the PGDB. Ive been assessed & approved a license as soon as I secure employment so thats not a problem! Im also going to pay them a visit to ensure I dont get caught out by anything!
Ive been to NZ numerous times & this is my big step now. Its do or die basically, to fulfill my dream of living and working there - & yes your right, I cannot wait to escape this cold grey dreary UK weather!!
As an employer, what else would you expect someone like me to bring, apart from CV etc etc??

Ha! Thanks Jaxcat! I thinks its a bit early for tools!! I meant what I should bring for any interviews & potential work experience in the domestic sector of plumbing/gas fitting!!

What do domestic plumbers & gas fitters generally wear over there?
Here British Gas supply me a uniform & steel toe capped shoes. Everything I need in fact - including PPE. (Personal Protective Equipment) & a vehicle/iPhone/laptop etc.
I know every company is likely to be different but a general idea would be helpfull.

Thanks.

I am ex British gas mate, drink it all in now because that's the last time you will see any of that mate, from all the jobs I have been too, you supply everything then the corrupt Board will screw you over, ignoring safety in favour for friends and fellow members of their clicks and clubs.

I am truly not trying to rain on your parade, but just trying to help you make an informed decision.

The country is amazing and I love it here, 99.999% of the people are honest and will help you in every way they can and are some of the best people I have ever met....sadly 0.001% run the Plumbers Board and are incompetent fools with massive ego's.

There are really good people here who will bend over backwards to help you, I hope you meet these before you meet the clowns.
You can't choose who you are.....but you are the sum of your choices.......

Hi Badger. Yeh I've heard all about the PGDB!!
Thanks for the info. I'm not put off though.
I guess we have to hope that things will improve!

Hi Gaven

Legally speaking your employer should provide ALL PPE gear, steel cap boots, hard hats, Hi Viz vests, goggles, ear muffs and anything other piece of safety equipment required to do the job safely.  Good employers do this - bad ones will tell you that you have to provide it.  This is illegal.  Check with them before you start work.  Some companies here have uniforms - many don't.  Guys generally wear what ever they have been given for free by the merchants :)  Summer is usually polo shirts and shorts, winter sweatshirts, long pants - clean but practical.  Bigger firms will undoubtedly have some form of company clothing, smaller guys usually it's wear what you want.
