HWC pressure relief drains
« on: June 30, 2020, 06:03:28 PM »
Hi there,

I had a new hot water cylinder installed last year. I noticed some dripping sounds on the weekend, as the HWC was heating, and went under the house to investigate. It appears that both the hot and cold water pressure relief valves just drain directly onto the earth under the house, right next to two piles. The dripping sound was (what google tells me) the cold water pressure relief valve dripping.

Is having these relief valves just drain under the house next to piles a code compliant installation? Do they not need to drain to the waste water? Should i get the plumber back to remedy this? Seems weird that they would just drain next to something structural.

Thanks for your help!

No it does not comply. the plumber should have run the drain to an approved point of discharge. E.g a gully trap.
Please note that the advice I am giving is only my opinion and not necessarily a fact.  Please refer to our terms and conditions.

Thank you very much. I thought that would be the case.
