Low Cold Water Pressure at Kitchen Sink
« on: September 25, 2012, 10:58:28 PM »
I have two story beach house connected to a community water supply system which is connected to a large tank (1600 litres I think) on my roof which feeds the house through a gravity fed system. The hot water cylinder is on the top floor in the kitchen. The shower, vanity and tubs on the ground floor all have good, reasonably even hot and cold pressure. However at the kitchen sink on the first floor I have good hot water pressure but very weak cold water pressure.
Could you tell me what may cause this.

Is the Hot water cylinder located above the first floor (above the kitchen sink) ? If yes that would explain the good pressure on the hot, the cold might simply not have enough head.. More info on layout would be helpful.
Please note that the advice I am giving is only my opinion and not necessarily a fact.  Please refer to our terms and conditions.

Has the cold pressure always been low, or is it a new development?

The Hot water cylinder is on the same floor as the kitchen sink. The kitchen sink is therefore on the same level as about half way up the hot water cylinder.
I have recently purchased the property so I can only assume that the problem has been evident for some time. I know that the problem was there when I purchased the property
I recently replaced the kitchen sink mixer but the problem was there before I replaced the mixer and the new mixer made absolutely no difference to the problem.

Its rare that the cold is low pressure when the hot is ok, its usually the other way around. I have come across this issue before and it turned out to be a kinked pipe in the wall... Is there any way of following the cold water pipe back from he tap? Any access at all underneath? I think the best thing to do in such a situation is probably call a plumber, doesn't sound right at all.

You say kitchen mixer? Single lever? Flexi hoses underneath it?
Most are designed for unequal pressure, low hot, high cold.
Generally performance on equal low pressure water will be poorer on the cold side of things

philmer,
there is a number of possibilities as to why the cold flow is lower than the hot including things like wrong type of tap, air lock, faulty pipe work, etc.
i would recommend you get a plumber in to eliminate all the possibilities, and maybe look at a upgrade to you water system, a low pressure system these days makes it really hard to use automatic washing machines and dishwashers let a lone if you want to upgrade you bathroom with modern tapeware,
a good plumber will advise you on the options available to you  :)
regards
I believe in doing a job once and right. !

Hi Guys,

I appreciate your advice very much.
I had a funny feeling that my problem was a bit unusual

Unfortunately I can only get at the pipe work for part of the way to the sink. The rest is in the walls - bugger.

I do have a single lever Sink Mixer with flexible hoses. I was very careful to ask if the mixer was suitable for all pressures. It is a Foreno LT140 Sink Mixer for Unequal/Mains pressure with a min pressure of 25kpa. The sink is more that 2.5m below the level of the water in the roof tank so I think I should have at least 25Kpa.
Could this mixer be the problem and is there any smart way to check it?
I think that the problem pre-dated this Mixer but I could be wrong.

Upgrading the water system would be nice if I had enough money to do it. I think I would need to replace the Cylinder and instal a Pump. What scares me is where to locate the Pump and what the likely costs would be getting power and water pipes to it. Have you any ideas about what this might cost. Even a ballpark estimate of the cost of a Cylinder and Pump would be helpful.

I guess that I should take your good advice and get a plumber to check out system.

Many thanks for you help
Phil

no point guessing Phil,
i recommend you ask around for a good referral for a plumber, get him in and get a quote,...
2.5 meters head!
i am guessing you don't have a dishwasher and even if you do i would guess it takes all day to do a cycle,
with such a low head of pressure no faucet of that type will flow very good, the bore in the tubes is less than 10mm.
also if the pipe work is not install correctly, you will get air locks that cause flow restrictions and that every well maybe what you have.
trust you have a low pressure perlator or no perlator on the end of the faucet?
regards

Thanks Bowtieboy

I will take your advice and get a plumber. I do not have a perlator on the faucet.

Just for interests sake I will let you know what we find out.

Phil
