Sentencing due today. Keep you eyes peeled on the Northern Advocate

This sentence makes a complete mockery of our judicial system. The Board hands down tougher fines for forgetting a bit of lagging.  Surely an inquiry into the inconsistencies is required?

bloody disgusting the guy should have been done for manslaughter !
who sold him the cooker?, the parts to hook it up? are they getting done too? bet they are not!
come on pgdb, pull finger and do something!
like
1, public campaign that gas must be done by a real gas fitter with a licence! and no other person!
2, make retailers aware of THEIR responsibilities when selling components for gas appliances to the public
3, make retailers of gas appliance's aware of their liability when selling a appliance

This is where I get pist off, I am paying pgdb to do a job and they are not doing it!
you got nearly 600 of my hard earned dollars and I expect to see it used wisely !

A Whangarei landlord has been sentenced to six months home detention for illegally installing a gas cooker that resulted in the death of a 19-year-old woman.

Lesley Wehi-Jack was killed on Waitangi Day last year when a faulty, leaking gas cooker caused an explosion which engulfed her house in flames.

She died later from her burns.

Peter McLeod had personally installed a gas cooker into the Ruakaka house before renting it to Ms Wehi-Jack in February 2013.

By law, a gas cooker must be installed by a licensed gasfitter.

McLeod pleaded guilty for failing to ensure the safety of the cooker's installation, and was sentenced at the Whangarei District Court today to six months home detention and ordered to pay reparations of $5000.

Energy Safety manager Mark Wogan said Ms Wehi-Jack's death was completely avoidable, and it was Mr McLeod's responsibility to ensure the house was safe to live in.

"Peter McLeod is a registered drainlayer. He knew that the work should have been done by a gasfitter."

Mr Wogan urged landlords and property owners to ensure all gas and electrical installations were perfectly safe, and to always use competent and licensed people to install, check and maintain the

Electrical Workers Registration Board
The Electrical Workers Registration Board comprises seven members all of whom are appointed by the Minister for Building and Construction under the Electricity Act 1992, for a term of up to three years. Members can be reappointed. Five members must be registered or entitled to be registered, and two lay persons must not be registered or entitled to be registered.

The functions of the Electrical Workers Registration Board are to:



*       ensure registered persons maintain an adequate level of competency

*       exercise disciplinary power according to the Act and initiate prosecutions for contravention of the Act in cases where the Board considers appropriate.

Complaints Assessment Committees are convened to hear complaints. Complaints Assessment Committees are appointed from a list of members who have been approved by the Minister. Members may be appointed for a term of up to five years.

Mr McLeod is a self employed registered electrical contractor with a current knowledge of the electrical sector. He was a councillor on the Whangarei District Council from 1998 until 2005 serving on a number of committees including the judicial committee.

hi guys, what was the boards involvement in this case? if no involvement then what is the purpose of the fees they charge us, cheers

The tragic thing here is that a young person was killed as the result of a  unsafe gas installation.
 the chap responsible has to live with the consequences of his actions as do the family.
This does bring the D.I.Y  problem up for  serious attention. It will be interesting to see the E.S.S take on this.

 
The issues of direct conflict of interest, favouritism  ,cronyism, old boys club, whatever you call it along with differences of  judgment imposed by the courts are issues that have to be put in the spotlight for examination and here lies a opportunity for the Federation along with others to lobby for change, with a positive outcome one would hope....
