To Take a Step back and Tell the Government That they need to sort their Shit out with this PDG Board Shambles,  I know its Not a Great time to do it and all, But, when is A Good time, when the government will actually Listen. It would Certainly Create  Media and Public Interest and John Key Will Have No Choice but to listen.
Its Not Blackmail its not a Media Stunt and Definately not a form of winning off other Peoples Misery.
But without the Tradespeople  Giving their Time, working their Guts out (alot for Free if not most)
Chch Would have been in a ton more crap, so to speak, had these workers not got in there and  sorted the issues as quick as they did. And again after this Latest Disaster, they will probably all be back there again doing the Backbreaking work Plus Some.
I Know I will get a lot of Backlash with what I am saying But Im sick of the Pussyfooting around. The Government doesnt give a Noodle about any of these Tradesmen. Maybe the Tradesmen Need to make sure they are Heard Finally.... I Hope all Families and Friends in CHCH of everyone on this Board are Safe,  I Have Heard My Family at this stage are okay but have lost their home

Time and a place mate.
This is a serious NATIONAL disaster; no one wants to listen to whinging bloody tradesman.

People are still buried under rubble, family members are still missing, and you're worried about your work conditions? ? ? ? ?

You're a f*ckin champ.

Well mate - at the risk of having a foot in both camps - I understand your frustration at the actions of the PGDB - and I know that this might appear to be an opportunity to make the Government stand up and take notice - but to be honest it would hurt people like us - average working people with families and kids and I don't think it would achieve anything other than piss lots of people off who would then pull back from supporting us.

If affirmative action was what you wanted the Rugby World Cup or election time would be a better bet. What you can do right now is put pen to paper and write to Minister Williamson and tell him what your concerns are.  See your local MP, write to your local paper, ring talkback.  Unfortunately a lot of this industry do like to cry in their beer and complain to each other but never actually put pen to paper, attend consultation meetings and make themselves heard - or write.  Sometimes the pen is mightier than the sword.

We have colleagues who are affected in Chch - who have family members who are missing, or hurt, or whose homes are badly affected - at this time I would much rather be helping them however I can - because taking the action you suggest will hurt them firstly - not the Government.

It's not that I don't understand your frustration - believe me I do.  Have you joined the Federation?  How about getting a few more to join?  Or if you are a Master Plumber member - put pen to paper there and ask them to represent your views.   It's all about numbers and politics.   Affirmative action has a time and place - but in my opinion the Christchurch earthquake situation is too hearbreaking to even contemplate using it as a platform to air our views.

Have you learned lessons only of those who admired you, and were tender with you, and stood aside for you?  Have you not learned great lessons from those who braced themselves against you, and disputed the passage with you?  (Walt Whitman 1819-1891)  American Poet

i understand your tatics jhonboy just like hone hawera's mother threating to have protests during what could be this countrys greastest sporting festival in dechades...but taking this sort of action at a time like this is not rearly a good suggestion because it will have a large possibility of backfireing and making us look like a bunch of no good users of others pain only intrested in our own pockets, like hones mum only protesting cus she knows, those at the top, because the worlds public eye will be on us, will have to listen...this to me is underhanded tatics and does not speak of people with integarity and good moral conduct...corkstarrr is correct there is a time and a place for this to happen and on the backs of hurt people and smashed dreams aint the time...but every dog to there own bone...yea the thought had crossed my mind but common sense should prevail and common sense says, stuff our problems with the board, there are people out there hurting and in need of our assistance...lets pick the fight back up on a diffrent day brother.

But good on you jonboy the only way quite people can move forward is by others having the balls to suggest new things and new way to look at the same old problem of this authoritiarian board.

i agree that there is a time and place and at the time of posting the size of this tragedy was just only unfolding i are glad to see someone else understands my frustration yes i are a member of the federation and was one of the first to put there on the list when Paul Luxton first put his article in the plumbers journal maybe another angle is to go to fair go or target who are always having a go at tradesmen but as always the kiwi way will prevail and we will all get in and help and support all of those who have been effected in chch.

Good on you jonboy!!  Keep up the fight.  You might like to keep an eye on TV1 Closeup when things come back to normal - I believe there will be an intersting story about a tradesman and the PGDB and also the Federation.

Hi Jon boy by the way good name
Yes it would be very low and shitty to us the Christchurch disaster for our gains we have to leave that to our politicians and also the likes of urine and co I offered my help as a plumber foc but urine informed me that he wouldn't let me have my craftsman licence so I could help anybody on another point on the news it was said that plumbers and gas fitters from around the world had offered to help I trust those wa--ers at the board told them to get lost.
As a plumber  I like to say my thoughts go out to all the people of Christchurch
