Your right absolutely bloody discusting  >:( and what do they do when they stuff it up? Call a plumber. We should all be banding together and charging a premium for fixing things that the home owner has had a go at.
Unless the moral improves the floggings will continue

I see what you guys are getting at and 100% whole heartily agree....

however from what i understand it is legal for anyone to replace/repair tapware, tap washers and valving

it is only when you go to ALTER (meaning to cut into, extend, reduce or modify in any way) a potable water supply or sanitary waste system you are then required to be licensed

Not to sure about the valving part integrated as this would allow the homeowner to potentialy replace there TPR valve and CWEV which is set to a certin pressure for the cylinder rating...so if the govt have let this slip in they have potentialy set up a system where homeowners could change there cylinder into a bomb.
Are you 100% on that integrated as i only want to know for sure before i put that info in my bank...cheers

Well said - still laughing at the thought of it!!!  That big giant orange fecker could certainly do it!!!  Wal Gordon - your mission should you choose to accept it is to recruit said big fecker!!! ;)

yup - apologies thunder should have clarified:

- Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Act 2006

- section 6 - meaning of sanitary plumbing
- (2) sanitary plumbing does not include
- (d) the work of repairing or replacing taps, ball valves, tap washers, or plugs

the clause I found most interesting:

6 - Meaning of sanitary plumbing

(1)In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires, sanitary plumbing means—
(b)the work of fixing or unfixing any trap

technically meaning it is restricted and licensed work to replace a trap of any kind!

Well at least Mitre 10 are re-active when something is pointed out to them.  More so than the PGDB anyway.  Well done to those who responded to M10 and pointed out the error of their ways.  Plumbers NZ Forum - educating the public since 2008 (or before)....

thanks guys, I understand the part of the act where you can replace a tap in your own home, but it makes me angry to see the general public doing something us plumbers get paid for! if everyone could do their own plumbing or replace taps plumbers wouldnt be needed at all.

I also understand that its alot cheaper to replace your own tap than pay someone $60+ a hour to do it - but we still have to work to support our families as well!!!

I dont agree at all with stores like mitre 10 or bunnings selling sanitary plumbing fittings like traps, waste pipes, water pipes and elbows etc, isnt that sanitary plumbing that shouldnt be done by the public???
