im with you roberto and I have said before

the only thing joe blow off the street should be allowed to buy are those things which he is legally allowed to physically do - taps, tap washers ball valves and plugs - and thats it end of story - no pipe, no fittings etc

fact is merchants dont give two hoots - they will sell to anyone and everyone to make as many dollars as possible

i have had many discussions with mico/crane, plumbing world, e.g's etc - they seriously dont give a shiite

anthing to fluff their own pillows - including cpd & cash work

i have finally started to make some headway with a sales rep from one merchant - also taught him how to check the plumbers he sells gear to are licensed - his jaw dropped when he saw that every second one was working illegally and he started to sympathise when i pointed out insurances void and they in a round about way become an accessory/accomplice to criminal activity!!

yeah i totally agree, if the pgdb keep putting adverts everywhere asking for people to ask a tradesman to see thier licence, why are these fitings avalible to the public in mitre 10, bunnings etc???

I got the recent plumbers journal last week that came with a bumper sticker for your car with:

"Hiring a plumber, gasfitter or drainlayer???

Ask to see there licence, it is illegal for anyone who is unlicenced to carry out plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying work"

doesnt make sense to me!

seems there  is no real concern about unlicensed people doing it themselves as far as the merchants go common to see builders loading up cu tube and waste pipe and Joe bloggs on the weekend. I don't get it you need a licence to buy and own a firearm and ammunition or explosive  but you can buy the material to do sanitary plumbing or gas work . Public health and safety?.......

We shop at Franklins and there pretty good the sales people hate members of the public buying gear off them but of course they are only counter staff and have no say...in fact one sales staff will leave any member of the public waiting as long as possible while he serves the licensed account holders first...the rep also told me today that he had rearanged the sale price to his costomers by giving licensed trades people the best deals...lol one of his builders moaned to him about not getting the same deal as plumbers...he quickly said if a plumber goes to placemakers does he get your rates???...he then said after you go and do your 4 years of traning come and show me your license and you will get the same rates as our plumbers get...lolololol good on him i reckon....
And if these trades do pose as great a risk to the health and safety of the public and we have to go through extensive traning and license fees and bullshit cpd then why the hell can joe blow bowl on in to plumbing world and bloody buy GAS FITTINGS...PLUMBING FITTINGS...DRAINLAYING FITTINGS...i mean what sort of story are they trying to tell us one hand says this is dangerous work and the other gives these dangerous products to joe plublic...Bunch of bloody idiots!!!.

yup - totally agree 100% guys

and i think this situation has a pretty easy fix also - tithe a bar code to a plumbers/gasfitter/drainlayer license which is run through the data base - if license current sale is allowed to be processed if not transaction not

think of it like a flybuys card - how many different outlets can you use it? plenty...

problem is "INDUSTRY STAKEHOLDERS" wont allow it to happen

And for my two cents worth - some of these merchants who are selling product to the public are also running Road Shows etc with points and are supporting the CPD schemes because they think it is important that practitioners keep up to date and remain competent - how does this sit with selling product to the public who are so NOT competent.

They want it both ways - selling to the public, lobbying parliament so that CPD scheme stays and they have a captive audience for selling stuff, and then also giving discounts to builders etc who shouldn't be putting this stuff in and are shafting the plumbers etc.

We have a merchant in Wellington who is having a big Stocktake sale at the moment.  They are selling Infintiy 26's with a free controller cheaper than I can buy from my merchant.  Rinnai support them and their sale, but yet expect practitioners to purchase Rinnai product all year around.  It just makes me so bloody wild that these suppliers are shafting us left, right and centre.  Joe Public will go and buy one Infinity from this merchant and won't need another one for 20 years, practitioners miss out on their margins and livelihood, and yet we might purchase 100 or 200 Infinities in a year and help keep Rinnai in business.  If this merchant can sell this stuff at this price and still make money then a) Rinnai are giving a damn good one off price  2) our regular merchants are shafting us  3) This merchant is an idiot and not making any money.

Just a clue (3) isn't an option.  They aren't idiots - just don't really give a stuff about practitioners and are not a merchant who contributes anything to wider industry - but in my opinion  more like the cut price bargin bin of merchants you know the sort, open the box and bits missing, once you walk out the door we don't want to know about it...  That sort, but a wealthy that sort.

hi guys this is what comes through`Builders Crack`cheers
...
I've bought new taps and waste to install in my bathroom vanity. I tried to do it myself, but evidently I don't have the right tools or really know what I'm doing, so couldn't manage to replace either. For the waste, I was unable to unscrew the u-bend and the flange/nut thing underneath the waste, but after that I couldn't get the waste to come out. I tried hitting it with a hammer a few times but couldn't get it to budge at all, so maybe there's something else that needs to be done that I'm not sure about? As for the taps, I wasn't able to get anything undone. I've got a photo of the taps and also a photo of under the sink looking up at the taps; it's pretty cramped working space due to the sink bowl. Ideally I'd like the job done this upcoming week but sometime next weekend or next week would be ok too. House is in Upper Riccarton, a few blocks away from the raceway.

Yeah same sort of guy that will want you to do it for cash and he will supply all the gear, but doesn't know what to get and so relies on the tradie to tell him and then he rushes off to a big box store to buy it....  All you can hope is that the whole thing goes to shit and a plumber gets the opportunity to come in and charge him heaps - once to undo all the crap the owner has done and then twice to fix it.
